Friday evening the MTQRL made their first appearance of the year at the Shelby County Fairgrounds in Shelbyville, Ind. With the Shelby County Fair going on outside the racetrack Ronnie Combs once again found his way to victory lane.
Combs took the lead from Jon Steed on lap nine and led the rest of the way to record the eighth MTQRL feature win of his career. Brett Hankins rebounded from a DNF on Wednesday to finish second followed by Rick Robinson, Jon Steed and Tate Martz. Tristan Maggart, Matt Hedrick, Logan Arnold, Caleb Faulkner and Bobby Walton rounded out the top ten.
Chris Mann won the Jackson Oil & Solvents Duel for Fuel and Perfect North Slopes heat winners were Hankins, Dustin Wheeldon and Mann. Hankins was also the fast qualifier for the fourth time in six races this season.
Tristan Maggart was the Tony Stewart Racing Rookie of the Race and also won the drawing for an American Racer tire. Rookie drivers Devin Fairchild and Matt Hedrick were the Duane & Sonja Alexander Hard Luck Driver and Indy Race Parts Hard Charger. Nick Speidel won the Jackson Oil & Solvents gift certificate.
During intermission the drivers went through the grandstands with their helmets accepting donations towards the Grandstand Rebuilding Fund. The MTQRL will match those funds and will present a check to the Shelby County Fair Association to assist in their rebuilding efforts. Although the historic covered grandstands can never be replaced the MTQRL hopes the contributions can assist the community in the rebuilding process.
