November, 06, 2010 Deepest Sympathies to the Hankins Family

Russell Dale "Sonny" Hankins, 78, a lifelong Rush County resident, passed away at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Russ was born August 16, 1932 in Rush County, Indiana to Clifford and Nita (Matthews) Hankins, both deceased. He married Zelda J. Mason on August 24, 1960 and she preceded him in death on October 22, 1995. Russ worked many years with International Furniture/Schnadig Corporation in Rushville. He was a Union carpenter and worked for companies out of Indianapolis. He retired after working for Rush Memorial Hospital ten years as supervisor of building maintenance.

Russ was passionate about three-quarter midget racing and was one of the founders of UMRA. He began racing in 1952 and won numerous awards throughout his lifetime. Some of these awards included a 1966 Rookie of the Year award, 1967 Sportsmanship award from Paragon Speedway, 1968 MVP award and he had multi year TQ midget champion awards in both the Midwest & Mutual Associations. He also enjoyed racing sprint cars. He was active in the Blue River Motorcycle Club, a member of the Carpenters Union in Indianapolis and active at Harrisburg Union Church in Connersville.

He leaves behind his sons, Sammy (Linda) Hankins of Connersville, Rodney Hankins of Rushville, daughter Peggy (Gary) Seward of Connersville, adopted son Mjr. Robert Wayne Matthews, US Army of Oklahoma, stepsons Gary D. Mock and Curtis W. Mock both of Rushville, former wife Wilma Young Mock, twelve grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Visitation will be 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday Novermber 10, 2010 at Moster Mortuary in Rushville. Services will be Thursday November 11th at 10:00 am, also at Moster Mortuary, with burial at the Dale Cemetary in Connersville.
